Description

One rectangular yellow-brown wooden box. Lid presents six Chinese characters in pale green pigment. Box interior lined in dark green satin. Contains ten miniature heads each elaborately painted with examples of theatrical makeup. Beneath each head is a small rectangular plaque with a double row of five or six Chinese characters in white pigment on a black ground.

Provenance

These model masks were given to Canterbury Museum by the Peking Opera Company, which visited New Zealand in 1956 and was hosted in Christchurch by Canterbury Museum.
