Wood: fasting tablet
Description
One rectangular brown carved wood fasting tablet. Obverse and reverse present a relief-carved botanical border surrounding a central rectangle containing two inscribed Chinese characters: 齋戒 (zhai jie, “fasting”); and 潔靜 (jie jing, “clean and pure”). One end of the pendant is threaded through with orange cord.

Acquired by Alley in Beijing. Gifted to Canterbury Museum by Alley in 1937 during a visit to New Zealand. In 1956, loaned to the Rewi Alley Chinese Art and Crafts Exhibition, held at the Provincial Council Chambers, Christchurch.
