Jade: seal

Description

Two elongated white mutton-fat jade seals with square cross-section. Both seals exhibit upper rounded edges and delicately carved stylised landscape imagery on their shafts. Bottom faces of seals reliefs carved with two versions of the name Rewi Alley in Chinese characters. Seals presented in fabric-covered box with exterior colour flower and leaf design and interior white lining.

Provenance

Presented to Alley by the government of the People's Republic of China, at a ceremony in Beijing to mark his 80th birthday on December 2, 1977. Given in appreciation of his services to the Chinese people since his arrival in China in 1927.
