Ceramic: vessel

One glazed green and brown earthenware vessel. Exhibits wide opening at top with out-turned rim. Body narrows under rim and widens again toward base. Green glaze covers majority of object with brown glaze defining narrow band on rim and broader horizontal band around base. Vessel also features beaded pattern moulded in relief around the upper-middle of the jar.

Rewi Alley

Found in a grave in Jiangxi. A rare accession from the early 1940s, this vessel was carried to New Zealand by G. Hazlett of Sydney, and J.L. Hay (1888-1971, founder of Hay's Department Store) of Christchurch. Loaned to the Rewi Alley Chinese Art and Crafts Exhibition, held at the Provincial Council Chambers, Christchurch, in 1956.
