On one side of the ink surface are seven seal-script Chinese characters, 雲漢常懸秦日月, meaning "The Sun and Moon of Qin always ride high in the Milky Way”. On the other side of the ink surface are three standard-script characters, 太素齋(Tai Su Zhai), meaning "Taisu Study”. Tai Su Zhai is the name of Le Fangqi’s 勒方錡 (1816-1880) study and collection room. Le Fangqi was a late Qing Dynasty official who had successively been the governor of several provinces like Fujian and Guizhou. Also a calligrapher himself, Le was fastidious with inks. He asked several ink manufacturers to customize ink for him. This ink was most probably made by Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi (1860-1875). On the back: three cursive-script Chinese characters - 螽斯羽 (Zhong Si Yu). It’s from the classic Book of Poetry, meaning "Ye locusts, winged tribes”. 2. On the side: 式好堂珍藏, meaning “Treasured and collected by Shi Hao tang (Hall of Shi Hao).” Huizhou has been the main area for ink production since Late Tang Dynasty. Hu Kaiwen (1742-1808) is one of the four ink-making masters in Qing Dynasty Huizhou. Since 1765, Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory has been making various kinds of inks. In 1915, the “globe ink” produced by the then Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory won a gold in Panama Pacific International Exposition. During the Republic China (1911-1949), with the prevalence of import ink, ink production in traditional Chinese ink factories drops sharply. Shortly after the foundation of PRC, in 1955, Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory underwent an reorganisation, and resumed production of top grade soot ink. With the tab of 143 pure black soot ink, this ink slab is definitely made during 1955-1960, according to the historical record of Hu Kaiwen Factory. On one side of the stone there is pattern and Chinese characters incised, covering the whole surface, and on the other side there is pattern carved in low relief and a majority of the surface hollowed out for the ink palette. The wooden case has details in black and a piece of material or paper stuck on the lid with a floral pattern. inkstone for calligraphy and painting. The Chinese inscription on the surface of this ink stone consists of 11 characters and two seals. The characters are 嘉慶三年秋七月錢塘黃易, meaning “In the autumn July of the third year of Emperor Jiaqing (1798) , Huang Yi of Qian Tang [inscribes]”. The inscription indicates that this ink stone was once in the possession of Huang Yi (1744-1802), a famous calligrapher in Qing Dynasty. Huang Yi was one of so called “Eight Masters of Xiling”.
