(Great Tang Restoration Preface to the Saintly Teaching of the Three Baskets), or,
(Preface to [the Translations of] Sacred Teachings [Prepared by] the Master of Three Canons during the Period of Resurgence of the Great Tang)

The literary content was written by the Tang emperor Zhongzong (656-710 AD). According to the inscription at the end, the manuscript was scribed by Fahui, a monk from the Xichongfu Monastery, by the Emperor Zhongzong's order. The manuscript was completed on 5 March 708 (AD).

Several lines of inscriptions at the top left indicates that this porcelain painting was selected as a gift for Li’s friend Ronghui in the year of 193X.

A painter from southern Anhui, Li Mingliang was a master of porcelain painting during the Republic of China (1911-1949). Li experted in and has been famous for grass-and-insect painting. Many claimed-to-be Li’s enamel paintings are in circulation in today’s Chinese art market. There are also not a few forgeries. Li Mingliang was posthumously awarded the title of Chinese Ceramics and Porcelain Painting Masters. (Xiongbo)

1. 霜葉紅於二月花 (meaning "frosted leaves are as red as the February flowers”)

These seven characters on the far right of the work, divided between the second and the third character by the twigs and red leaves, is taken out from a popular Tang Dynasty quatrain “Shan Xing” (Mountain Trip):

Climbing to the cold distance of this winding stony path,
leading to a place of white clouds where people live,
I stop my carriage and sit in appreciation and love of the evening maple trees,
where frosted leaves are as red as the February flowers (spring flowers).

(Mr. Alley, the master, please kindly point out my inadequacies. Respectfully presented by Keran.)

This inscription is on the top right. I’m not sure about how to translate the first part, so I list the meanings of the constituent terms as follows:

Alley
先生: Mr.
方家: a person who is well versed in certain skill, art, etc.; master.
雅教: [modest] would you kindly point out my inadequacies

3.  可染畫 (painted by Keran)

This inscription is on the bottom right.

4. Three seals:
Seal on the top right: 李 (Li)
Seal on the bottom left: 李 (Li)
Seal on the bottom right: 可染 (Keran)

Two of the seals indicate his family name - Li; the third seal his given name - Keran.

              <text>Liu Hai is a famous Taoist figure who is also the founder of the Quanzhen School of Taoism. <https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/刘海>
(Xiongbo)
Painted on paper, depicting corpulent male figure wearing loin cloth only (and with breasts and belly exaggerated as in treatment of Ho Shang), playing flute and standing on a toad or frog in water. Described by Rewi Alley as "sun-god boy (Liu Hai)". Gordon McArthur can find no mountain of Liu Hai in the folk lore (possibly name of artist) and considers this version might be in error for the woman Huang Hsien, portrayed riding on a toad through the waves (cf Japanese Ko Shin). Note by Rewi Alley: "There are very many kinds of pictorial representation of Lieu Hai and his girlfriend changed into a three legged toad who afterwards went to the moon and became Chang O in her original form. She is alone there in her moon palace of jade. Lieu Hei is usually the irrepressible country boy. He feeds the toad on copper cash. The legend very like that of Horus and his girlfriend who also became a frog and went to the moon. There are many Ming brass figures of Lieu Hai, and countless pictures of Sung, Ming, and up to the middle of Ch'ing....I think they show a legend that probably started in the Asian heartland from which the potters came who descended into the valley of the Milo first and lorded it over the people there. Ancestors of those who in later stages came east and the Pai Sing who lorded it over the Li Min in Central China and made Shang and Yin.</text>

              <text>Chinese inscription on the top: 第十一孝蔡順拾椹 (“The eleventh finial exemplar: Cai Shun - Picking Mulberries For His Mother). There are twenty-four filial exemplars in ancient China, and Cai Shun is one of them, ranked the eleventh. Cai Shun’s story is recorded in the book The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety:

During the Han Dynasty, there lived a devoted son named Cai Shun, whose father passed away when the boy was quite young. He and his mother relied on each other to survive the days and years. Wang Mang had just usurped the throne at that time, and the entire country was in great commotion, suffering a famine, a drought, and a civil war in progress all at once. The people suffered from these dire calamities, many families starved, and those who could manage to do so, were forced into the fields to forage wild plants and roots for food. Often, decent men turned to banditry and robbery, just to pass this time of hardship. The roads were infested with gangs of thieves; the forests were havens for the homeless and the desperate.

One day Cai Shun took two wicker baskets out into the woods to gather mulberries for his mother. Beneath the trees he ran into two wicked looking robbers. They were carrying long sharp swords and their faces were cruel and dark.

"Hey kid, don't you want to live? How do you dare invade the big Boss's territory?" shouted the biggest of the bandits. Little Cai Shun was scared speechless. The smaller bandit looked closely at the boy's work, planning to eat anything of value. "Child, why are you tossing that fruit into two baskets?" Cai Shun answered in a trembling voice: "The black mulberries are riper and sweeter. I give those to my mother. The red ones are not ripe, but sour. Those I eat myself, sir. I hope you two gentlemen will not kill me or else my mother won't have anybody to look after her."

The boy's earnest simplicity and honest answer touched the two thugs' heart of compassion. Remembering their own parents' suffering, they decided not to harm Cai Shun. Instead they supplied him with food and drink, and released him back to his mother.

A verse in his praise says:

The black mulberries went to feed his mother,
Whose blouse was stained with tears from hunger's pain;
The red-browed thugs heard his filial thoughts:
Then gave him meat and rice and set him free.

The above translation of the story is from: <http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~asia/24ParagonsFilialPiety.html>

Xiongbo

</text>

"Dai Jin, Wade-Giles romanization Tai Chin, courtesy name (zi) Wenjin (born 1388, Qiantang, Zhejiang province, China—died 1462), Chinese landscape painter of the Ming dynasty. Dai was one of the leaders in the early Ming revival of the Ma-Xia (after Ma Yuan and Xia Gui), or academic, style of landscape painting of the Southern Song (1127–1279), which came to be called the Zhe school (after Zhejiang province, in which Hangzhou, the Southern Song capital, was located). The Zhe school was later placed within the lineage of “professional” painters and held in lesser regard in contrast to the school of literary “amateurs,” who were more concerned with personal expression and who were then represented in the Wu school in which Shen Zhou held an equivalent place of leadership.”

Painted on silk, mounting identical with scroll (above), probably another copy of a well known original. The theme is a continuous procession of travellers with donkeys, travelling through a hilly, wooded landscape typical of China south of the Yang Tse. Note by Diana Wilkman (March 1958): "Main road from Wei river valley of Shensi province across mountains to Szechuan." Note by Rewi Alley: "This is a favourite composition of the road fromt eh NW down into Szechuan. From the old capital of Changan in Shannxi, actually, to what was then known as "Shu" and now we call Sichuan. "Shu Dao", Sichuan road."

The British man Mr. Rewi Alley, an investigator of our union, will be transferred to the Inspection Department of the factory. We have worked with Mr. Alley for many years, all knowing that he has a keen interest in Chinese calligraphy and painting. Therefore, we commissioned this hanging scroll from Jiang Size, a famous painter in Loudong, for Alley and our friendship as well. In the July of the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1934).

Down the hillside are built a few elegant pavilions,
white clouds coming and going away recurrently.
Not necessary to greet and see off visitors;
they will come despite the wind and rain.
Those coming might as well ease their pace,
Why should one speculate who has no intention.
Distant clouds beginning to heap up,
Who will arrive and join us?

Would you kindly point out my inadequacies,

ALLEY’S CAREER FROM 1927-1938:
From 1927 to 1938, Rewi Alley first served as the Fire Inspection Officer (防火督察) and then Chief Industrial Inspector(工業督察長) in the Shanghai Municipal Council (工部局) within the Shanghai International Settlement (上海公共租界). The transferring of position mentioned in Alley’s colleague’s colophon must refer to his shift from the Fire Department to the industrial section of the Shanghai Municipal Council.

For a discussion of the Shanghai International Settlement, see <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_International_Settlement>

In 1927 Rewi Alley “felt that he was lucky to get a position in the fire brigade because there were so many Europeans withou a job...Later he was appointed inspection officer for the fire department and in 1932, when an industrial section of the Shanghai Municipal Council was established, he was appointed chief factory inspector.” (Willis Airey, 1970, p. 65).
