A Bodhisattva is an enlightened being which remains in the earthly realm. This earthly connection is indicated by the heavy adornment of the figure. The Bodhisattva is semi-detached from the material world, which is indicated by the right foot which extends beyond the throne onto a semi-detached flower, in a gesture to reach down to the material world. Similarly, the right palm is facing upward and toward the viewer, resting on the right knee in the ravi mudra, a gesture of giving. The left hand is raised holding a thin wire between the thumb and middle finger which is a remnant of the stem of a flower which would have hovered above the figure’s left shoulder. The hole in the garment near the elbow on the right arm indicates that there were additions to the statue, most likely another stem which extended down to the right hand. Such statues housed religious scrolls wrapped in cloth, which were added as part of the consecration of the object. n.b. is the right hand gesture actually the varada mudra (gesture of charity)? Face exhibits a small nose and mouth but has no eyes. Horizontal incision on brow creates the impression of a hairline. Top and rear of head presents sculpted cord and pigtail. Lower left side of its face is marked with dark grey speckling. Figure wears an elaborate hairstyle bound into a knot above its brow. Facial features comprise closed eyes a long nose and a small mouth. Two small holes drilled into the back of the head suggest that there are missing attachments. Head rests on a plain red-brown carved wood base cuboid in shape. The figure sits in the lotus position with both legs folded, a characteristic seated position for meditation. The right hand is extended down and resting on the right knee with the thumb and two middle fingers touching, while the left hand supports an object in the left hand in the abdomen region. Portrait head of Rewi Alley (now of Peking) modelled in 1936 in Christchurch during Rewi Alley's last visit to his native city, by Francis A shurrock. Cast in bronze in 1958, and presented by the sculptor and other well wishers as a tribute to the influence of Rewi alley in spreading knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture in New Zealand. Rewi Alley's cumulative donations of Chinese (and Japanese) art and archaeological materials since 1935, and reaching a peak in 1956, proved the chief inspiration of the decision to set up the Hall of Oriental Art, which was planned by the Director and M Jacobs in early 1957, the cases constructed by K Peppler, and the general display selection and decor completed by Mrs Turbott after her appointment (in command in late 1957). Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived Francis A Shurrock (1887-1977) Provenance A statement of any changes in ownership and custody of the resource since its creation that are significant for its authenticity, integrity, and interpretation. The statement may include a description of any changes successive custodians made to the resource. Bronze bust of Alley by Francis Shurrock, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1939. This original bronze cast was lost in enemy action on way to New Zealand. The present bust was re-cast and donated to Canterbury Museum in 1958 by a group of friends of Alley, including Shurrock. It was exhibited at the opening of Canterbury Museum's Hall of Oriental Art in 1958. In a letter to Roger Duff, entitled 'One thing leads to Another' (8 July, 1975), Shurrock described how he came to make the bust, having first met Rewi's brother, Geoff: 'I was invited to “Westcote” to meet Geoff’s people & on the 2nd occasion Rewi Alley was home on leave from the Shanghai Fire Brigade in China. He had gone there after failing for six (6) years to make a living with a war mate on some stony land in Taranaki. Rewi & myself became friends & I asked him if he would pose for a modeled portrait but he would have none of it. I had noticed there was a particular bond between Rewi and his mother so I suggested that I should do the modeling & if she didn’t like it, the clay head could be thrown back in the clay bin. The bargain was made & Mrs Alley was brought to see the modeling & we left her alone with it for a while. She made no comment on going away; I was most disappointed. However 2 days later I received a wonderful letter from her telling me how she had always thought of Rewi as a dear kind boy but had not noticed the strength of character. So there it was I had won my bargain. The clay head was moulded & cast in plaster & this plaster head was in due course sent to London to be cast into bronze, accepted & exhibited in the Royal Academy Annual Exhibition.'
