A tsuba (鍔, or 鐔) is an often finely decorated round or squarish guard at the end of the grip of bladed Japanese weapons which stops the hand from sliding onto the blade whilst being used. The tsuba (鍔, or 鐔) is usually a round or occasionally squarish guard at the end of the grip of bladed Japanese weapons. The tsuba was mostly meant to be used to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade during thrusts as opposed to protecting from an opponent's blade. Container was used for storage of archer’s thumb ring and was worn by Manchu officials suspended from the belt by the toggle. On one side of the stone there is pattern and Chinese characters incised, covering the whole surface, and on the other side there is pattern carved in low relief and a majority of the surface hollowed out for the ink palette. The wooden case has details in black and a piece of material or paper stuck on the lid with a floral pattern. inkstone for calligraphy and painting. Roughly oval stone with floral decorative and inscriptions, purplish. Hollowed surface as of palette. In wooden case. The Chinese inscription on the surface of this ink stone consists of 11 characters and two seals. The characters are 嘉慶三年秋七月錢塘黃易, meaning “In the autumn July of the third year of Emperor Jiaqing (1798) , Huang Yi of Qian Tang [inscribes]”. The inscription indicates that this ink stone was once in the possession of Huang Yi (1744-1802), a famous calligrapher in Qing Dynasty. Huang Yi was one of so called “Eight Masters of Xiling”. (Xiling refers to the area around Hang Zhou, Zhe Jiang Province).
